Quality Public Education - the Honourable Michael Kirby visits Perth Modern School

On an initiative of the Perth Modernian Society Vice President Peter Farr to mark the school’s Centenary year, Politics and Law students had the rare opportunity to share very personal insights into both public education and the highest court in the land, when the eminent former High Court Judge the Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG delivered a special lecture in the School Hall on Wednesday, 26 October.

VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR SPHINX FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP APPEAL

The Sphinx Foundation Scholarship appeal is an important initiative by the Perth Modernian Society to support the School and its students. Its aim is to invite people who value the fine education provided by the School since 1911 to contribute to a Foundation to provide scholarships for worthy students. The scholarships are to “Support the growth of individual students to their full academic, intellectual, social and physical potential”.

SCHOLARSHIP FUND PROGRESS

Perth Modernian Society President Barrie Baker and Sphinx Foundation Inc Treasurer Peter Farr say that a great start has been made to the Appeal, enabling the inaugural Sphinx Scholarships and Bursaries to be awarded in 2011. So far the progressive total raised is $136,000 towards the target of $490,000, and $42,000 has been donated .by Old Modernians for subject areas scholarships (namely, Creative Writing and Music). tenable in Years 11-12 .

The school is wanting to establish a register of contacts of former students who have served their country in times of conflict.

VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR ARCHIVES and MUSEUM ACTIVITIES

Volunteers are sought for to assist in the management of the school's museum collection and archives.

CENTENARY APPEAL

The goal of the Centenary Appeal is to raise money for restoration of the School’s heritage buildings. The Governor, Ken Michael, AO, launched the Appeal in 2007.
