Chair, Foundation Board

Nigel was appointed as a Director of the Sphinx Foundation Inc. in 2016 and has served as Chair since 2021.

Nigel is a corporate lawyer who is a partner of a national legal firm. He has had two daughters attend the school and served on the Perth Modern School Board from 2015-2018, where he was both a member and Deputy Chair. Nigel was an active participant in the successful Save PMS Campaign in 2017 and was made an honorary member of the Perth Modernian Society.

He has been involved with the Sphinx Scholarship Fund through its fundraising appeals as well as representing the Sphinx Foundation at various school events. Nigel believes strongly in the work of the Sphinx Foundation and the benefit it has brought to help many hundreds of PMS students to aim high and achieve their potential.

Nigel has provided legal support to a wide range of charitable and community organisations through assistance with their initial set-up, ongoing governance and training, with a particular focus on medical research and indigenous organisations. He is also a member of the Board of The International Skills and Training Institute in Health as well as former WA State Chair of the Corporations Law Committee.

Mr Rob Gray

Secretary, Foundation Board

Rob was appointed as a Director of the Sphinx Foundation Inc. in June 2018, has served as board secretary since 2021 and currently chairs the investment sub-committee of the Board.

Rob is the chief economist and commodity strategist for an international investment firm. He has had a daughter and son attend Perth Modern School. His more active board contributions leverage his investment and finance industry professional experience, along with seeking positive mentorship and corporate contact to benefit Perth Modern School, the Perth Modernian Society and the Sphinx Scholarship Fund.

Rob is passionate about the purpose and mission of the school and its alumni society, along with the Fund’s goal of enriching student opportunities, fostering a culture of giving and investing in the legacy that today’s students will bring to our community in the future.

Prior becoming involved at Perth Modern School, he served as a member of the Wembley Downs Primary School board, helping to usher the school towards becoming an Independent Public School (2014-2017). Rob originally moved to Perth in 2010, having lived in Melbourne, London, New York and California prior to that.

Mrs Vivian Wang

Treasurer, Foundation Board

Vivian has been a Sphinx Foundation Board Member and Investment Committee Member since 2019 and Treasurer since 2022

Vivian attended Perth Modern School from 2005 to 2009 and has served on the Board of the Sphinx Foundation since 2019. She was appointed Treasurer in 2022 and is also a member of the Foundation’s Investment Committee. Driven by a strong belief in the power of education to transform lives, Vivian is committed to supporting academically gifted students at Perth Modern School through sustainable, well-governed scholarship funding.

Vivian is a Fellow Chartered Accountant, Chartered Tax Adviser, Registered Tax Agent, and Registered Financial Adviser. As a partner of a chartered accounting firm, she brings extensive professional expertise in financial management, governance, and compliance to her role with the Foundation.

Alongside her work with the Sphinx Foundation, Vivian is an Education Facilitator for Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand’s (CA ANZ) CA Program, mentoring aspiring professionals as they progress through their qualifications. She previously served as Chair of the CA ANZ WA Regional Council in 2023, contributing to the strategic direction and leadership of the accounting profession in Western Australia.

Vivian’s dedication to community service extends to her roles as Treasurer and Non-Executive Director for various not-for-profit organisations, including Yourtoolkit.com and the Rotary Club of Elizabeth Quay. Her passion for giving back is matched by her ongoing commitment to empowering others through education and professional development.

Mr Peter Farr

Director

Peter has been a Sphinx Foundation Board member since 2008 and Investment Committee Member since 2018.

Peter was a Perth Modern School scholarship student 1954-1958, and followed careers totalling over 50 years in engineering, management consulting and Non-Executive Directorships. Peter has made a large commitment to the Perth Modernian Society (Inc) having been a Councillor 2006-2025, and he served as its Vice President or President from 2006 to 2018. Peter played a key leadership role in the successful Save PMS Campaign in 2017 and was awarded the honour of Modernian Fellow in 2018 for his distinguished contribution to the Society and thereby the advancement of education at Perth Modern School. Commencing in 2018, the Perth Modernian Society Council nominated him to represent Modernians on the PMS School Board, and he has served several times as its Deputy Chair.

He was appointed as a Director of the Sphinx Foundation Inc. in 2008 and as Hon. Treasurer from 2009 to 2021. He has been involved with the Sphinx Scholarship Fund as its Treasurer and investment manager since its inception in 2009 during which time the fund has grown considerably thereby helping many hundreds of PMS students to aim high and achieve their potential. A particular interest has been coordinating the annual Malka funded Entrepreneurship and Leadership Program since its inception in 2020.

Peter has also had extensive community involvements with appointments to the Board/ Council/ Committee of St Catherine’s College (UWA), Convocation (UWA), Parents and Citizens Committees, the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club Offshore Committee, St John of God Subiaco Hospital, University of the Third Age (Perth), and Hon. Treasurer of ArtsNational (2022-2025).

Dr Annette Mercer

Director

Annette was appointed as a Director of the Sphinx Foundation in 2024.

Annette attended Perth Modern School as a scholarship student, 1958 – 1962. She has had an extensive and varied career in education at both secondary and tertiary levels and is currently an Associate Professor in Medical Education at Monash University. She commenced her career as a Mathematics teacher with the Education Department of WA, followed by a range of different roles at both The University of Western Australia and Murdoch University. At Murdoch, this included pre-service teacher education in the School of Education.

In recent positions with The University of WA and Monash University she has been involved in the area of selection of students into the health professions. During this time she has developed a significant interest in equity, diversity and inclusion in an educational setting. She has experience in leadership roles, in managing large projects and in working collaboratively in a variety of situations, nationally and internationally.

Annette is applying her background in secondary and tertiary education to the Foundation’s scholarship programs and the lighthouse Entrepreneurship and Leadership programs.

Mrs Jordan Moro

Executive Officer, Sphinx Scholarship Fund

Jordan was appointed to the role of Executive Officer of the Sphinx Foundation Scholarship Fund in January 2026.

In her role as Executive Officer, Jordan oversees the administration of the Sphinx Scholarship Fund, working on a part-time basis in collaboration with the Sphinx Foundation Board of Directors, the PMS staff and partners of the Sphinx Foundation.

Jordan attended Perth Modern School from 2003 to 2007 in the music school era and had the distinction of being elected President of the Student Council. She has a strong background in marketing and communications, including website management, marketing strategy, project and budget management. She has worked across sporting, local government and not-for-profit organisations, which includes long term experience with the Cancer Council WA and the Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation.


Mr Mitchell Mackay

Ex officio Adviser to the Board

Mitchell has been the Principal of Perth Modern School since July 2023, following an extensive career with the Education Department of Western Australia, including recognition as the Principal of the Year for 2021 at the WA Education Awards.

His qualifications include a Master of Education in Educational Management and Administration and a Bachelor of Education in Mathematics and Science.
